Sara and David Ramirez didn’t expect to have children. It wasn’t that they didn’t want kids. They were in their 30s, newly married and eager to start a family together. But a doctor had told Sara that, due to an old car-crash injury, it was unlikely that she’d be able to carry to term. The diagnosis was crushing, but the couple were healthy and otherwise happy.
